Out of nowhere, aliens come and destroy the planet, forcing the player and others to escape in a ship. Starbound tells the simple story of the player character who has just graduated from the academy. It is available for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. That’s not necessarily a bad thing: the combat is fluid, the driving is great, and you really feel like you’re duking it out in the desert with a bunch of bloodthirsty gangs. The game is similar to previous titles published by Warner Bros., namely the Batman Arkham games. Woe to those who try to come between old Max and his dusty desert drag racer. In the 2015 title by Avalanche Studios, you take control of our beloved post-apocalyptic tough-guy Max Rockatansky as he works towards his goal of beefing up his car into the ‘Magnum Opus’. Needless to say, I was surprised when I bought it on a whim and booted it up. To be honest, when this game came out, I wasn’t even aware that there was a Mad Max game in development. It drops you in and says, ‘have a go at it’. The game is what it means to be open-world and nonlinear. Want to join the kingdom of Swabia and bring cold steel to the enemy kingdoms? Or are you more of a bandit, robbing caravans and sacking villages with impunity? You can do these and much more. The player is basically given scant supplies and told by the game ‘ make a name for yourself‘. Released for Windows, Linux, and macOS in 2008, M&B puts you in the boots of a lone adventurer who has journeyed to a fictional war-torn medieval kingdom. This is a great little gem of a game that I’m surprised doesn’t have more of a splash in the gaming world. Okay, the history of such an iconic aspect of gaming is great and everything, but what are the best titles? What is the best open-world game ever? Wait no longer, I’m here to tell you what the best worlds are to immerse yourself in fully. It can truly be an unforgettable experience. You and your buddies are in a haunted crypt and everything is going well, that is until the dungeon master decides to throw a curveball at you and decides to summon high-level giant French snakes wearing birthday party hats. It can be great fun precisely because of the freedom the players have in the world they create. You and your friends would create adventurers and dungeon crawl, relying heavily on imagination and party dynamics with those you were playing with. Even before Zelda, there were Dungeons & Dragons. Of course, you have classics like the first Legend of Zelda title in which the player controls Link around the wilderness, with the player ultimately deciding where their adventuring takes them. What if I told you that the first modern open-world game came out in the mid-1970s? I believe many gamers were introduced to one of the most famous open worlds, that of Liberty City in Grand Theft Auto III in 2001. Unbelievably, open-world games go back a lot farther than you would think. Open world games have often become tied closely with games with literal wide-open worlds like the featured cities in the Grand Theft Auto franchise and the rich world of The Witcher series. This can benefit the player greatly, as they can choose to take on a tough mission when they’ve leveled up, instead of feeling stuck, unable to beat a difficult boss. You can take time to both literally and figuratively go off the beaten path and play the game your way. You move in a straight line until you get to the end, point A to point B.Ĭompare that to the most recent Final Fantasy XV, in which you and your party can tackle main game missions or side quests at your own leisure. Playing through Final Fantasy X will have you and your party trudge along with the monster-infested Mi’ihen Highroads, battling tough foes all along the way. The open-world doesn’t refer necessarily to a living, breathing game world, but rather a more nonlinear approach to level design and player interaction to the world.

Do this by showing pictures of cool things their broke asses can't afford! We need to establish authority and wealth by showing cool shit we've done. Show them how badass your life is through pictures! Now that we've identified our target audience, we can start getting them to trust us through simple manipulation. Target psychological emotion: Greed and laziness. So let's fill them up with hope, then drain their wallets of cash □ They want to bypass all that hard work, and get straight to the riches! These people are generally on the lower ends of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. They want the end result, without the hard work. This kind of crowd doesn't understand that success usually requires years of hard work. These are people who dream of "finding a passive income source that requires no work!"īy the time we apply some fancy copywriting and psychology to these gullible people, they'll be willingly handing over their money. These are people who think internet riches are "a push of a button away!" These are people who subscribe to the idea they "deserve" to live a good life. Make sure you focus on a hopeful yet sort-of-dumb crowd. Let's put our "Evil Hats" on and get started: Our goal here is to deeply exploit human psychology, and get the most vulnerable and needy people to fork over what little cash they have. So let's take the easy way and scam people into giving us money! You can sign up for Google’s dual factor authentication by clicking here. The real key to success is making great products and putting a lot of hard work into them. Although it does take one extra step to confirm the validity of something like a Google Doc, the effort is well worth the time. Unfortunately, two-factor identification isn’t something the average consumer uses. “With dual factor authentication, when you go to access your account a special code is sent to your cell phone if the request to access your account comes from a different computer or device that you generally use.” “Even people who fell for this scam, would be safe if they used dual factor authentication for their Gmail account, which would prevent someone who had your password from accessing your account,” Wiseman stated. Wiseman adds some Google-specific suggestions that consumers would be wise to read:īefore you click on links or download attachments, verify that the email is legitimate, regardless of where they may appear to originate from. With nearly 30 percent of everyone in the world using Google Docs on a daily basis, scammers figure that opening a Doc attachment is something that’s pretty normal for folks who work online.Ībout the only thing that is going to beat a scammer at their game is vigilance. If you’re wondering “why Google Docs,” it’s pretty simple. Scammers are resourceful and continue to leverage anything they can get their hands on into a cyber heist. “A strong indication that this email was a phishing scam was that the address from which it was sent was the email address of an individual who had no connection to Google Docs.” Vigilance continues to be keyīarely a day goes by that ConsumerAffairs doesn’t see a scam rolling across our desks. “It is important to remember that it is very simple for a scammer to include the Google logo and a logo for Norton Security (an Authorized Partner), so you can’t trust an email merely because it carries such logos,” warned Scamicide’s Steven Wiseman, Esq. It also contains this message: “this message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.” The default verbiage in the phishing email typically says something like, “Alan sent you a Document via Google Docs Apps,” followed by a box containing the Google and Norton Security (an Authorized Partner) logos. When they do, keystroke-logging malware is installed which, in turn, can lead to identity theft or ransomware. But even worse, your contact list is also compromised, which gives the hacker a whole new pond to phish in by sending out emails that look like they’re from you Ģ) When the folks on your contact list get that email, they see a link that “you” say they should click on. If you do, you then give a hacker complete access to all your emails. It works like this:ġ) You, trusting soul that you are, get an email that asks you to click on a link to open up a Google Docs file. Photo (c) Artur - Getty ImagesA new phishing scam riding on the back of Google Docs attachments has put the world on alert.Īs reported by Scamicide, the ruse is a simple two-pronged approach, but it’s deadly. This is unnecessary, as you can use the Shadow and Highlight recovery and adjustment brush in Camera Raw or Lightroom to bring out the same amount of detail in the photo. Note: For real HDR, you shouldn’t use a single raw image and exposure it several times as some people suggest. Use a tripod if you can, otherwise support yourself on a wall or solid object to reduce movement between frames. If you change the aperture, the depth of field will also change, producing unwanted blurring in your final composite. Make sure that you only change the shutter speed. I set the camera for Auto Exposure Bracket and 2 stops + and. But once again, for the majority of HDR photography 3 shots are usually perfect. You might be able to capture a lower contrast enviroment such as a foggy day in a single frame. I needed 7 photots with 2 stops apart in order to capture the entire dynamic range of that scene. For the example of the Bradburry building, I captured a series of Photographs inside a dark building in Los Angeles with a sunny day outside a glass window. It really depends on how much contrast is in your scene. Sometimes you need to capture more than 3 exposures. If you’re shooting people, you may want to reduce this to single stops. I know this is a bigger bracket than some people are comfortable with, but for the type of HDR images I like to create (cityscapes), this works great. I like to over expose and under expose by 2 stops each. I personally get good results from 3 shots. Technically you will need to shoot a minimum of 2 photos with different exposure settings to create a HDR. I have also just added a tutorial on HDR in Camera Raw (Photoshop CC 2015) (See bottom of this page for an updated HDR resource list)įirst we need to capture our source images with our camera. In Photoshop CC Camera Raw was added as an option, and Lightroom 6/CC can now merge HDR more about that here too. This tutorial will work for all versions, including CS6 and HDR in Photoshop CC. This tutorial will show you how to complete this process with the minimum fuss. Finally, merge these photos together to produce a single image with a larger range of tones that can now show all the details in the shadows and highlights. Shoot a normal exposure (center image), then under-expose (left) to capture the highlights outside the windows and over-expose (right) to capture shadow detail. The solution is to take more than one photograph and bracket the photos. When you are at the location, you are able to see all these detail with your eye, this is because the human eye can see a larger range of tones than the camera can capture on the sensor or film in a single photograph. Also the detail on the stair rail is lost because it’s too dark. Notice that the detail outside the door is lost because it’s too bright. The center image is a typical exposure, showing an average metering to produce the most detail possible. For example let’s look at the series of images I shot at the Bradburry building in Los Angeles. We meter for the most important part of the scene. Typically we sacrifice elements in a photo when we set the cameras exposure. Watch the HDR Intro video that explains what HDR isĪ camera is capable of capturing a limited amount of tones in a single photo (we call this dynamic Range, the range of tones that can hold detail between pure black and pure white). Basically it’s the process of taking multiple exposures and merging them together into a single 32 bit image. HDRI (High Dynamic Range Imaging) was originally used in 3D and is now in full force in photography. I n this tutorial we will take a look at HDR photography. I have also learned a great deal more about the subject, so I decided it was time for an update. I originally wrote this tutorial for Photoshop CS3, in the years since then, Photoshop has gotten a couple of big upgrades in the HDR area, and we are now at Photoshop CC. Each note corresponds to a syllable in the lyrics: The tabs show it being played on the high E string, but you can play the same notes on the low E for a more bass-heavy version.įirst, lets start with the first two lines. There is not a single scholar who would question the appearance of the works of Wyntoun, Bower, Major, or Scott within the Robin Hood canon – that is to say, those texts which scholars have agreed are an undeniable part of the Robin Hood tradition. During the nineteenth century, the first two Robin Hood novels entitled Robin Hood: A Tale of the Olden Time and Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe, both of which were published in 1819, were written by Scottish authors and first published in Edinburgh. For example, it is in medieval and early modern Scottish chronicles written by Andrew of Wyntoun, John Major, and Walter Bower, for instance, that Robin is first established as a ‘historic’ figure, and not merely a man who exists in ballads. Throughout history many Scottish authors have shaped the Robin Hood legend. The proposed paper, therefore, is intended to fit into the panel ‘Women Collectors and Collected Women’. Brown enjoyed a ‘literary afterlife’ in the tradition as Goody – the old woman who recites Robin Hood stories to dinner guests – in the first ever Robin Hood novel entitled Robin Hood: A Tale of the Olden Time (1819). Brown’s ballads as being of little merit compared to earlier material, Mrs. Although twentieth-century Robin Hood critics have derided Mrs. Jamieson had transcribed the ballads from Anna Gordon Brown of Falkland, Scotland. In that collection two new never-before-seen Robin Hood ballads appeared entitled The Birth of Robin Hoodand The Wedding of Robin Hood and Little John. Five years after Ritson, however, Robert Jamieson published Popular Ballads and Songs, from Tradition, Manuscripts, and Scarce Editions (1806). With high-res screenshot options, texture toggles and the ability to move the sun itself, Townscaper makes for a shockingly good desktop wallpaper generator. Sure, you can awkwardly finagle the camera to a street-level view, but I long for an update that'll let me stroll the boardwalks myself. It's just a shame you can't zoom right down to a first-person view. Furthermore, I would like to thank the creator Oskar Stålberg for giving us this project.Townscaper may not have the complexity of a Cities: Skylines, but its quaint towns littered with cobbled streets and old churches, dockyards and lighthouses feel more instantly homely than the sterile American-styled metropolises of "real" city-builders-even when your town includes impossibly tall citadels or Bioshock Infinite-style floating cities. My thoughts - I don't think this game is for everyone, but if you are a creative person and love to build your worlds just like myself, I believe you would be able to get enjoyment out of this game. But I would like to see more features added to the game such as a population or stuff to make your town look more lively. The game is still very simple and early stages, the only thing that you can do is build your town which is not necessarily bad. Gameplay - The gameplay is really simple, you will only be using your mouse to play the game. So if you like the idea of showing your town to others, it is perfect for you. Visuals - Townscaper is a beautiful and simplistic game, without tweaking any settings the game is already perfect for taking screenshots and that aspect is further improved with the latest build which added new times of the day and different lightings. It's only some 150MB, so will be downloaded real quick, and perhaps it'll amuse you for a few minutes. However, if you have a game pass, I'd recommend you give it a try while it's on there anyways. If you remember it as something boring you were forced to do because you couldn't go play outside or watch tv / play videogames, you'll probably want to steer clear. If you remember it fondly, you'll most likely enjoy Townscaper. This game is like that time you sat down with your wooden blocks or your lego as a child, threw the manual to the corner, and decided to build a town of your own. This game is about just plopping down a couple blocks and building an island town, painting it in a variety of vibrant colors and basking in the glory of your own creation. In Townscaper, players will select a color, plop some blocks onto the grid and watch as the game's underlying algorithm automatically turns them into cute little houses, arches, stairways. Anyways, there's no goal, no "You won!" screen, nor a "You lost!" one. So thanks for broadening my horizons, lol. This nocebo effect is exacerbated by class and power distinctions, with the "elites" projecting their own selfishness onto the masses. We see the evil we expect to see: a nocebo. Bregman's answer is that cynicism, the belief that we live on Planet B, conditions people to expect others to have cynical motives regardless of their actions. It also presents the problem of determining why this myth is still believed. That people continue to maintain their belief that the world we live in is a Planet B type in the face of such evidence strongly suggests that "the idea that people are naturally egotistical, panicky, and aggressive is a pernicious myth". Most participants believe that we live on Planet B, while the evidence overwhelmingly suggests we live on Planet A. If we live on "Planet B," we should expect to see people panic and turn on one another as they desperately try to secure their own safety. If we live on "Planet A," we should expect to see people banding together and helping one another through the crisis. His studies present people with the hypothetical situation of a plane crash and asks participants to choose which way they believe their fellow victims may behave in the immediate aftermath. That this belief is unpopular has been shown by the research of Tom Postmes, professor of social psychology at the University of Groningen. This idea "seems to have been denied at every turn in the annals of history", including now. remained convinced that it was best to bomb civilians", to recognize the reality revealed to them by new evidence resulted in the vast majority of Allied bombing runs wasting their ammunition, time, and lives on targets who would never break instead of on factories that would.īregman here explicitly advances his core thesis that "most people are decent". The failure of military command, including Winston Churchill, who "until the final few months of the war. Rather than revert to barbarism as many had expected, civilians of both nations became more altruistic in those dire times. Moreover, there was a drop in alcohol consumption and suicide attempts. Instead, an increase in the quality of mental health had been found. The German people, by contrast, were said to lack the fortitude necessary to withstand.Īfter the war, British psychiatrists visited bombed German cities and found none of the expected traumatic cases. Despite this, the British military maintained that "the will of a people could be broken by bombings", defending this belief in the face of the evidence by insisting that British citizens possessed a unique character required to handle the stress of bombardment. Contrary to these expectations, the British high command found no sign of mass panic after the German bombings of London. World leaders such as Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, and Winston Churchill read Psychologie des foule by French psychologist Gustave Le Bon, which argued extreme hardship would make people return to their uncivilized and selfish nature. Prologue: Civilian Resilience After Bombing ĭuring World War II, before the London Blitz and the Allied counter-bombings over critical German cities, it was thought aerial bombardments would sow panic and chaos among the population, breaking their will. It also uses the state of nature debate between Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Thomas Hobbes as a framing device, siding with Rousseau's position on the matter. The book takes a multi-disciplinary approach, drawing from history, economics, psychology, biology, anthropology, and archaeology findings. If society were less adamant about the belief that humans are naturally lazy, there would be less reason to oppose the widespread introduction of poverty mitigation measures like basic income. In the United States, the paperback release was a New York Times Best Seller. It has been translated into over 30 languages. It argues that people are decent at heart and proposes a new worldview based on the corollaries of this optimistic view of human beings. It was published by Bloomsbury in May 2021.
